My arrival on the shore, sporting a long lens, resulted in warnings that other photographers had had their equipment smashed by unwelcoming local surfers. Once I had explained that I was not working for a surf magazine, and that I didn&#8217;t even really know where I was, things settled down a bit. However, I still beat a fairly early retreat.
