Cavernous mouth of a Humpback Whale

We enjoyed an extraordinary day several miles off the New England coast, when everything just fell into place and provided a spectacle which far exceeded our highest expectations. According to the accompanying marine biologist, who has spent several years regularly observing these magnificent creatures off the Atlantic coast, this was possibly the most spectacular and prolific gathering she had seen in that time.

In this case, as the feeding Humpback breaches the shoal of bait fish, we can see the detail of the filtration system which it uses to expel the water and retain the fish.
