We enjoyed an extraordinary day several miles off the New England coast, when everything just fell into place and provided a spectacle which far exceeded our highest expectations. According to the accompanying marine biologist, who has spent several years regularly observing these magnificent creatures off the Atlantic coast, this was possibly the most spectacular and prolific gathering she had seen in that time.
The bait fish shoals seemed to carpet the entire ocean, and the Humpbacks were using every fishing technique in their arsenal, from individually tail slapping to stun or kill the fish, to working in groups to corral the bait fish within columns of bubbles. All of this continued in remarkably close proximity to our boat and, at times, it was hard to know which way to look next.
